This weekend we wrapped up warm, brews in hands and boldly set on another attempt to bring order to the chaos that has been our back garden for the last 3 years. Being winter we have a chance to get it all together before the new year’s growth that will return fire trying to undo all our back-breaking-hard-work.
I remember when we first moved here back in 2005, the back of the garden (pictured) was not visible from the house due to the many trees that had grown thick branches down to the ground, a result of many years of neglect by previous tennants. I’ve kept the route through to the back mostly clear since then but there are still branches that over-shadow the whole area which has held back any resistence allowing the weeds to dominate that half of the garden.
It was only in the last few months that we discovered just how far back this garden goes when we found yet more space beyond what appears to be long-forgotten bedding. The whole space has been consumed by over-growth and creeping ivy which can be seen on the ground at the top-right of the photograph.
I took a hack-saw to many of the less significant trees which has created a pile of mangled branches the size of a small car. Our normal method of disposal using the monthly garden waste collection is not suitable for the job at hand and so after a bit of research I’ve decided that once we’ve finished gutting the area I shall rent a garden shredder one weekend which will rapidly turn the severed remains into fine garden mulch which we can compost and return to the soil.
